Abstract

Objective: To evaluate the safety and efficacy of thermal balloon endometrial ablation therapy in women with menorrhagia. Material and Methods: From December 1999 to March 2001, fifteen procedures of thermal balloon endometrial
ablation
were performed. Treatment consisted of controlled heating to 87¡É of 5% dextrose in water within an intrauterine latex balloon pressurized to 160§®Hg for 8 minutes. General anesthesia was employed in 3 cases while local anesthesia with
intravenous
sedation was used in 12 cases. Exclusion criteria included structural uterine abnormality or premalignant lesion. Follow up period was 6 months to 21 months. Success was defined as the subjective reduction of menses to eumenorrhea or less.
Results: No intra-operative complication occurred and post-operative morbidity was minimal. Overall success of the procedure was 80%(12 case), with 27%(4 case) reporting amenorrhea, 53%(8 case) hypomenorrhea. Conclusion: Thermal
balloon
endometrial ablation is safe and effective in properly selected women with menorrhagia and is potentially an outpatient procedure.
